Steve Taylor, PhD, is the author of Extraordinary Awakenings, The LEAP: The Psychology of Spiritual Awakening, Spiritual Science, Back to Sanity, Out of the Darkness and many other books. He’s senior lecturer in psychology at Leeds Beckett University and the chair of the Transpersonal Psychology Section of the British Psychological Society. Steve’s articles and essays have been published in over 100 academic journals, magazines, and newspapers and he blogs for Scientific American and Psychology Today.

Here he defines spiritual awakening as an opening to a larger understanding of onesself. Ultimately, he maintains that our deepest self as at one with the entire universe. Many human problems result from a sense of separation, of being stuck at an ego level. He describes several types of awakenings. Often they result from a sense of acceptance, even in the aftershock of trauma.

Debashish Banerji, PhD, is Haridas Chaudhuri Professor of Indian Philosophies and Cultures and Chairman of the East West Psychology Department at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He is author of Seven Quartets of Becoming: A Transformative Yoga Psychology Based on the Diaries of Sri Aurobindo and also The Alternate Nation of Abanindranath Tagore, a book about his great grandfather. He edited an anthology about his great uncle, Rabindranath Tagore in the Twenty-First Century. With Robert McDermott, he has coedited an anthology titled Philo-Sophia: Wisdom Goddess Traditions.

Here he describes the historical context in which India’s greatest spiritual classic emerged. It was likely the product of an iteration of poet/sages. It is part of an ancient, epic poem, The Mahabharata. It addresses the moral dilemmas of violence, death, and warfare. However, it achieves a transcendant vision relevant to all times and places. The peak moment of the text is when the charioteer, Krishna, reveals his divine nature to the warrior prince, Arjuna.

Bernardo Kastrup, PhD, is a computer scientist, who has also completed a second doctoral degree in philosophy. He is author of Rationalist Spirituality, Why Materialism is Baloney, Dreamed Up Reality, Meaning in Absurdity, Brief Peeks Beyond, More Than Allegory, The Idea of the World, Decoding Schopenhauer’s Metaphysics, and Decoding Jung’s Metaphysics: The Archetypal Semantics of an Experiential Universe. Here he describes the enormous influence of Jungian thought upon his own work. He explains that, although Jung often professed to avoid metaphysical speculation, toward the end of his life he was clear about his position as a philosophical idealist. This is particularly reflected in his theory of synchronicity as well as in his identification of the collective unconscious with phenomenal reality. Kastrup also describes synchronicities he experienced while writing about Jung.

Elizabeth Krohn is first author (with Professor Jeffrey Kripal) of Changed in a Flash: One Woman’s Near-Death Experience and Why a Scholar Thinks It Empowers Us All.

Here she reflects back on implications of her near-death experience that occurred when she was struck by lightning in 1988. Since then, she has experienced a telephone call from her deceased grandfather – and also many accurate, but unpleasant, precognitive dreams – typically involving disasters. She maintains that our conventional notion of clock time is an incomplete picture. The science fiction movie, Arrival, portrays a deeper understanding of time. One can think of all time as existing in the “now” moment.

James Tunney, LLM, is an Irish barrister who has lectured on legal matters throughout the world. He is a poet, a scholar, and author of The Mystery of the Trapped Light: Mystical Thoughts in the Dark Age of Scientism plus The Mystical Accord: Sutras to Suit Our Times, Lines for Spiritual Evolution; also Empire of Scientism: The Dispiriting Conspiracy and Inevitable Tyranny of Scientocracy, TechBondAge: Slavery of the Human Spirit, and Human Entrance to Transhumanism: Machine Merger and the End of Humanity. Here he describes the context in which Rev. Robert Kirk wrote his classic book about faeries in 1691. He emphasizes that Kirk was not intending to write a book of folklore, but rather an accurate description of experienced phenomena. He points out that interaction with such beings appears to be dependent upon the common gift known in Scotland and Ireland as “second sight” – a form of clairvoyance. Here he notes that the use of mantra was elaborated in the earliest writings of the Upanishads, approximately 900 BCE, prior to the time of the Buddha. At an even earlier stage, the hymns of the Rig Veda were considered to be mantras. The essential idea is to allow the power of sound to move consciousness beyond conceptual thought to a realm of non-dual unity. When used with focused attention, mantras are thought to exert a magical force.

Jessica Utts is emerita professor of statistics at the University of California, Irvine. She is former president of the American Statistical Association. She is the first author of Mind in Statistics and is author of Seeing Through Statistics. Professor Utts served as a judge for the recent Bigelow Institute essay competition.

Here he shares his observations from over 45 years of conducting acting improvisation workships with practitioners of Zen Buddhism. He points out that wearing masks almost inevitably has the temporary effect of liberating individuals from their ego-bound consciousness. He likens this experience, in some ways, to taking psychedelic drugs. He points out that meditation offers a more permanent way of attaining liberated states of awareness. He also observes that psychotherapy can play an important role in freeing one from unhealthy behavior patterns.

Debashish Banerji, PhD, is Haridas Chaudhuri Professor of Indian Philosophies and Cultures and Chairman of the East West Psychology Department at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He is author of Seven Quartets of Becoming: A Transformative Yoga Psychology Based on the Diaries of Sri Aurobindo and also The Alternate Nation of Abanindranath Tagore, a book about his great grandfather. He edited an anthology about his great uncle, Rabindranath Tagore in the Twenty-First Century. With Robert McDermott, he has coedited an anthology titled Philo-Sophia: Wisdom Goddess Traditions.

Here he points out that artifacts relating to the worship of the mother goddess are found throughout the world, going back as far as 40,000 years. Such traditions are associated with the earth, with the wisdom of the body, with magic, and with equality of the sexes. Over time, the emphasis has shifted to the masculine deities, resulting in the egoic development of humanity. Presently we are witnessing a global renewal of goddess traditions.

Shelly Tygielski is author of Sit Down to Rise Up: How Radical Self-Care Can Change the World. She is the founder of Pandemic of Love, an organization responsible for raising over $60 million to help individuals since the COVID pandemic began.

Here she describes her journey starting at a low point in her life, as a divorced, single mother, suffering from a medical condition that resulted in blindness.
