InPresence host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in “parapsychology” ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). For many years he served as president of the non-profit Intuition Network, an organization dedicated to creating a world in which all people were supported and encouraged in developing inner intuitive abilities.

Here he reflects on the process of transitioning from normal waking consciousness to a dream state. He notes that the state just prior to sleeping and dreaming is known as the “hypnogogic” state. He describes several stages of this process in his own experience, suggesting that viewers pay attention to the shifts in consciousness that they experience throughout the day. He also refers to Tibetan dream yoga practice as well as to research on deathbed visions.

Here he refers to his personal experience within the Jewish religion — noting that prayers, blessings, and rituals are common to virtually all religions. However, when these rituals become repetitious after many days, weeks, months, and years — they begin to take on a mechanical quality. In Hebrew, the term for what is lost is “kavanah”, which means a focus on the inner meaning of the words. Jeff then reflects on the central role of psi in authentic spirituality.

Here he suggests that, perhaps, the entire human body serves as the organ of psychic perception. He adds that he does not believe that the body ends at the skin, but rather that it extends out into the universe. He refers to the “focusing” work of Eugene Gendlin as a way to access information that is in the body. He also points to our understanding that the body is the successful result of billions of years of evolutionary trial and error.

Here he points out that there is very little that parapsychologists understand regarding the process by which psi functioning occurs. However, one solid finding — consistent with a great deal of research on communication — is that the signal to noise ratio is crucial. Various strategies to reduce noice, both internally and externally, have been shown to produce enhanced psi scoring.

Darryl Robert Schoon is a financial analyst famous for having predicted the 2008 market crash. His website is www.drschoon.com. He is author of Light in a Dark Place: The Prison Years, Time of the Vulture, Report to the House Select Committee on Intelligence, Is God Confused?, and The Way to Heaven. He has also written a novel titled You Can’t Always Get What You Want. He is a minister with the Temple of Universality in Tucson, Arizona.

Here describes a number of prophecies regarding catastrophic earth changes, including those by Edgar Cayce as well as other channeling and mediumistic sources. He acknowledges that many such prophecies in the past have been unsuccessful. He shares his perspective that such catastrophic events can have the positive impact of getting people in touch with long-repressed emotions.

He relates the principle of progressive contraries to the Dialectic philosophy of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. He shows how one can apply this principle in politics and in parapsychology.

Here he shares some contemplations about the nature of pure nothingness. He notes that the universe began with nothing and that cosmologists suggest it will eventually return to nothing. This is also true, it seems, of consciousness itself. The great insight of Buddhism, regarding the nature of Nirvana, also relates to nothingness. Yet, in order to be the source of the entire universe, this nothingness is clearly quite dynamic.

Here he reflects on the idea that “we are the stuff that dreams are made of”. He notes that the line comes from Prospero, the magus in Shakespeare’s great play, The Tempest. Shakespeare was influenced by the Hermetic tradition and, it seems, meant the line to be taken seriously. Jeff also refers to an online course in Tibetan dream yoga, that emphasizes the same idea. If one considers the parapsychological data on reincarnation, life perhaps is much like a dream.

James G. Matlock, PhD, an anthropologist, is coauthor (with Erlendur Haraldsson) of I Saw a Light and Came Here: Children’s Experiences of Reincarnation. He is a regular contributor to the online Psi Encyclopedia sponsored by the Society for Psychical Research in London. He has authored dozens of academic papers concerning reincarnation and related areas.

Here he describes the research approach initiated by Ian Stevenson at the University of Virginia. This method focuses on young children who report spontaneous memories of having a previous life. Some 2,500 cases of this type are now in a computer database. Approximately 1,700 of these cases have been “solved” – meaning that the identity of the previous person has been corroborated, base on the child’s statements.

Here he focuses on a research study published in the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, titled “An Exploratory Study of Lucid Dreams Concerning Deceased Persons” by Annakatrin Puhle and Adrian Parker. Ninety participants were asked to practice a technique for inducing lucid dreams. Of these, 28 reported lucid dreams of deceased persons. A few of these dreams seemed evidential of post-mortem survival, although this was not the purpose of the study.

Here he describes the “As If” philosophy of Hans Vaihinger. He first learned of this approach when it was used as a justification for removing a resident at the Institute for the Study of Consciousness in Berkeley, CA. The philosophy suggests that — since we lack the means to validate or falsify many hypotheses in metaphysics, religion and related areas — the best test is to determine the pragmatic value of behaving “as if” they were true.

The study involves a sophisticated confirmation of Bell’s Theorem in physics and addresses the question of whether an external world exists independent of our observations. This study involved more than a dozen different laboratories and over 100,000 human participants.

Here he reflects on how Einstein’s theory of relativity treats time as relative to the speed travelled by various observers. The faster one travels, the slower time moves. So, at the speed of light, time stops completely. A human being traveling at the speed of light could traverse the entire universe without growing one day older. Yet, from the point of an observer, the trip would have taken billions of years. Jeffrey suggests that this scientific fact has enormous implications for the potential of our consciousness.

Here he discusses the probability that, to the extent we each wish to protect the private aspects of our lives, we contribute (unconsciously) to the suppression of psychic abilities in our culture. The Freudian theory of the unconscious makes it clear that we all are engaged in hiding some aspects of ourselves from ourselves. He concludes by asking how willing we are to allow others to see us deeply and wholly.

Here he explains that Spiritism was originally founded by a French pedagogue who wrote under the pen name of Allan Kardec. Spiritism took root in Brazil where it combined with African religions brought by slaves. Perhaps the most famous of Brazilian Spiritist mediums was Chico Xavier, who wrote many books presumed to be dictated by spirits of the deceased. One such story has been made into a film called Nosso Lar or The Astral City. Jeff reviews the story and imagery of the film.

Here he refers to Lee Sannella’s book, Kundalini: Psychosis or Transcendence. He describes several personal experiences that he attributes to kundalini. These were all relatively mild and benign. The most powerful of these experiences was associated with a spiritual group focused on Kashmir Shaivism. He also notes that kundalini experiences can be unpleasant. On one occasion, his wife was able to remove unpleasant systems by attending a kundalini yoga ashram in Tennessee.

He reviews research on ESP with business executives; as well as personality studies related to ESP ability.

Here he describes his relationship with attorney William Jennings of San Jose, California, who originally introduced himself to Jeff, out of the blue, as “Captain Rainbow”. After Jeff had been libelled by an article in Psychology Today magazine, Bill Jennings agreed to pursue a lawsuit on a contingency basis. After six tedius and difficult years, they prevailed and Jeff received a financial settlement.

Here he recollects how he met Saul-Paul Sirag on his birthday in 1971. Sirag wrote a syndicated column on science called “The New Alchemy”. He was raised by missionary parents, with a strong fundamentalist Christian background. In WWII, he was interned in a Japanese concentration camp on the island of Borneo — where his father died. In 1973, Jeff and Saul-Paul were both invited to move into the Institute for the Study of Consciousness in Berkeley, founded by the cosmologist, Arthur M. Young.

Here he recollects how he met D. Scott Rogo and how the two of them determined that they were probably distant cousins. D. Scott Rogo was known as a historian of parapsychology and also the author of twenty books in the field and many scientific papers. He ventured into areas that parapsychologists often shy away from. He was tragically murdered in 1990. Today, the murder remains officially unsolved.

He has written biographies of Carl Jung, Aleister Crowley, Rudolf Steiner, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Emanuel Swedenborg, P. D. Ouspensky, and Colin Wilson.

Here he describes the many mystical threads that run through Russian history. He describes the interplay of Slavic and Mongol shamanism with the Orthodox Christian faith. He highlights many paradoxes associated with the Russian character, such as a penchant to fuse devout religious feelings with a violent temperament. He focuses on Russia’s unique geography that is both European and Asian.

Here he relates how, when he was in his early 20s, he became fascinated with the idea of spending a lengthy amount of time in solitary isolation. The inspiration for this was a magical grimoire call The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. He made a study of accounts of people living alone. Eventually, he spent one week alone on Mount Shasta in northern California. This experience was important for character development.

Here he reflects on the cultivation of psychic gifts and spiritual attainments. He points to the example of Nikola Tesla who managed to transmute the annoying siddhi of super-hearing into an amazing gift of creative invention. He notes that siddhis do not always work out for the best. And, he uses an example from his own life to suggest that one can enjoy siddhis without expecting or craving them. He also maintains that character development promotes the attainment of siddhis.

Here he initiates a discussion about karma as a follow-up to InPresence 0061: Resist Not Evil. He points out that the principle of karma implies a universe based upon cosmic justice. He also notes that the study of reincarnation cases does not support this view. However, the “past-life review” reported by near-death experiencers is consistent with the notion of karma. He then brings up the concept that acts of kindness toward our enemies is a rapid way to repay karmic debts.
