InPresence host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in “parapsychology” ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). For many years he served as president of the non-profit Intuition Network, an organization dedicated to creating a world in which all people were supported and encouraged in developing inner intuitive abilities.

Here Jeff shares his impressions after viewing the presidential address to the Parapsychological Association given by Dean Radin, author of Real Magic. There are several reasons for optimism. Membership in the Association is at an all-time high. The American Psychologist, flagship journal of the American Psychological Association, has just published a very favorable article summarizing the highly significant results of 1700 psi research studies published in refereed journals. Scholars from many fields of study are considering the fundamental role of consciousness in science.

Here Jeff describes the British occultist, poet, and mountaineer Aleister Crowley (1875 – 1947) as an important counter-culture influence in the 1970s. Crowley was an early forerunner of the sexual revolution and promoted the use of both sex and various drugs in the context of magickal rituals. He believed himself to be the inaugurator of a new era for humanity in which individuals would seek to align their own free will with the will of the cosmos.

Here Jeff focuses on efforts to replicate some of the unusual macro-psychokinetic phenomena that were reported in nineteenth century spiritualist seances. In England, Kenneth Batcheldor developed a method for achieving table levitations. He incorporated a seance-like atmosphnere — but with neither the solemnity of a religious service nor any spiritualist mediums. In Toronto, Canada, the local Society for Psychical Research expanded on Batcheldor’s work — by successfully creating an imaginary ghost they named Philip.

Here Jeff shares his excitement and anticipation about meeting an individual whom he has not seen in 45 years — Joanna Harcourt-Smith. When he originally met her, and interviewed her on KPFA-FM in Berkeley, California, she was known as Joanna Leary, the wife of Timothy Leary. She worked tirelessly for years to help release Timothy Leary from federal custody — even promising to go on a hunger strike. Subsquently, in 2013 her book about these experiences was published, titled Tripping the Bardo with Timothy Leary.

Here Jeff describes three different types of experimenter effects that can, potentially, contaminate scientific studies. The first of these involves influence experimental subjects through direct statements, subtle hints, and non-verbal cues. Typically, the use of control groups and double-blind protocols protects against this. The second type of experimenter effect involves the use of Questionable Research Practices (QRPs). The third, and most serious, is the possibility of experimenter psi. The best way to protect against this possibility is to focus on the magnitude of psi in our experiments — rather than the process.

Here Jeff notes that he could divide his life into two phases: before and after psychedelics. Before psychedelics, growing up as a teenager in Wisconsin, he imbibed alcohol liberally. In Wisconsin, it was almost a patriotic duty to drink milk on weekdays — and beer on weekends. He also notes that he has personally witnessed or known of many tragic circumstances resulting from alcohol use and abuse. He regards 12-step programs as a positive social contributing resulting from alcohol addiction.

Here Jeff describes his experience of being libelled in 1980, as well as the six-year long legal battle that followed. Eventually Jeff emerged victorious. Nevertheless, the lawsuit took its toll. A particular difficulty for those who have been libelled is dealing with the response from former friends and supporters who distance themselves and take a “wait and see” attitude toward the situation. Jeff then points out that one of his favorite guests, Jason Reza Jorjani, is now suffering from a libel much worse than the one he endured.

He emphasizes the importance of “set and setting” and points out that, while he experienced more than 100 psychedelic sessions, they were all in the context of philosophical inquiry and self-exploration. His stable personality was also a positive factor. He describes engaging in lengthy conversations with Hardin B. Jones, a medical physicist who denigrated psychedelic drug use.

People who believe that they can perform well on a test of ESP tend to do so; while people who do not have confidence in their ability tend to score at chance levels of below. Statistically significant psi scoring, below chance expectation, is known as psi-missing. Jeff integrates this finding with our general understanding of the role of belief systems in human performance behavior.

Paul Levy is author of The Madness of George W. Here he describes the concept of a virus of the mind, infecting all of humanity. He references the native Cree term Wetiko. However, it could be thought of as Satan or Ahriman or the Archons. In Jungian terms, it involves a projection of one’s own shadow on to elements of the world at large. It is a form of psychic blindness. However, when we recognize the Wetiko for what it is, we also see that it is an expression of our own power in the external world. Quantum physics now shows us, unequivocally, that the distinction between objective and subjective is an illusion. Just as all elements of a dream are a reflection of one’s own psyche, so do we bring the “objective world” into existence through our collective consciousness.

Here he points out that he is more of a cyborg that he appreciated earlier when discussing his new pacemaker. He also wears hearing aids and uses a special air pressure machine to help sleep at night. And, he plans to meet with a surgeon soon to discuss a possible knee replacement. All of these developments indicate of how rapidly the human species is merging with technology of our own creation. Yet, in spite of amazing progress, human ignorance remains, and will always remain, overwhelmingly greater than human knowledge.

He declined at that time, knowing that he would eventually require one. He suggests that he is now somewhat more of a cyborg — and that this is a global trend. He also elaborates on these events as related to consciousness.

Eventually, with the assistance of Benjamin Rush, they reconciled and developed a close relationship. Adams’ last words were “Jefferson still survives.” Jeff speculates that, perhaps, Adams had a deathbed vision of Jefferson waiting to greet him from the other side.

He points to the work of Julius Wellhausen, in the early twentieth century, inaugurating a new era of biblical criticism by identifying different authors of the five books of Moses. He points to the lack of evidence, in ancient Egyptian records, of any references to the events portrayed in the Book of Exodus. He notes that excavations of the City of Jericho have found the the ancient walls decayed slowly over time, and did not collapse suddenly as is portrayed in the Joshua. He also highlights the work of Yuval Noah Harari and his emphasis of the human capacity for creating fictional stories.

James Tunney, LLM, is an Irish Barrister who has lectured on legal matters throughout the world. He is a poet, a visual artist, and also author of The Mystical Accord: Sutras to Suit Our Times, Lines for Spiritual Evolution. Here he discusses various elements of society that are antagonistic to mysticism. He notes that the objectivist philosophy of Ayn Rand, while antagonistic to religion, and therefore mysticism, ought not to be — since it emphasizes individual freedom. However, objectivism has strong rationalistic and scientistic elements that tend to view mysticism as a dangerous superstition. Here he revisits the recent video conversation with Jason Reza Jorjani about Franz Kafka’s novel, The Trial. He points to one interpretation suggested by Jorjani: that we are all guilty of being at odds with ourself to a greater or lesser degree. No one is so well-integrated as to be free of self-contradictory behaviors. In fact, there are many other things for which we might well feel guilty. Jeff suggests that we can address this situation by letting go of all guilt. He points out that, in so doing, we must seek to become more responsible for our own actions.

Here he notes that, in many academic circles, the idea of forming religious (or other) beliefs — in the absence of evidence — is considered a grave intellectual sin. William James challenged this position in his essay, “The Will To Believe”. Simultaneously, James also challenged Blaise Pascal’s famous argument (Pascal’s Wager) in favor of religious belief. Parapsychologists typically eschew belief, in favor of hypothesis testing. However, they also acknowledge that those who believe they can experience ESP perform better in laboratory tests.

Here he notes that the best-selling book, The Power of Positive Thinking, was written by Rev. Norman Vincent Peale, pastor of the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City. This is the church that Donald Trump attended as a child and the one to which he claimed to be a member. One can see both the negative and positive aspect of Peale’s philosophy reflected in the Donald Trump narrative. Jeff then goes on to highlight the thinking of psychiatrist, Jule Eisenbud, who warns that individuals with self-destructive psychic complexes can harm themselves when engaging in parapsychological activity.

He also highlights the conflict between the transpersonal movement and the thinking of the great existential psychologist, Rollo May.

Within days, the excruciating pain and disability she had been experiencing for nearly half a year vanished and has not returned since.

He maintains that parapsychology has much to learn from spiritual traditions that employ telepathic communication. He intends to continue exploring this. But, he does not wish the New Thinking Allowed channel to take on a cult-like appearance.

He also describes a major paradigm-shift in western culture with regard to witchcraft.

He concludes that the universe is friendly, in spite of the enormous suffering that exists.

Here he corrects an error he made in InPresence 0103 in which he reversed the meanings of hypnopompic and hypnogogic. He explains that the error occurred because of his understanding of the word “psychopomp” as the person who guides one into a deeper knowledge of the soul. Subsequently, he has come to see that the psychopomp is better known as one who traverses the worlds of both the living and the departed — sometimes associated with the “grim reaper”. He explores the deeper meaning of that interpretation.

Here he describes an email received from physicist Jack Sarfatti, highlighting the claim by physicist Hal Puthoff that a U.S. Navy video of a UFO was not of human origins. Sarfatti, himself, has claimed to have been contacted by a conscious computer aboard a space ship. Currently, Sarfatti is developing an interesting theory that offers a precise definition of consciousness in physical terms. Sarfatti claims that his work could lead to the creation of conscious computers.

Here he describes a dream experience that resulted in both a poem and a synchronicity. The synchronicity led to him attending a series of seminars sponsored by an organization called Falling Awake. Their approach was contrary to many spiritual teachings insofar as they promote the notion that desires are desirable. Jeff introduces the term “entelechy” and points out that sometimes, in order to actualize our full potential, life may take unexpected twists and turns.

Bruce Olav Solheim, PhD, is professor of history at Citrus College in Glendora, California. He also served as a Fulbright professor in 2003 at the University of Tromsø in northern Norway. He has just begun teaching a paranormal personal history course at Citrus College Fall 2018. He is author of five books on history and political science, one novel, three plays, and three books about his personal paranormal history, Timeless: A Paranormal Personal History, Timeless Deja Vu: A Paranormal Personal History, and Timeless Trinity: An Extra-Terrestrial and Paranormal Personal History. Here he explains that his own paranormal personal history exploration has led him to investigate odd memories associated with ostensible alien encounters. To do so, he sought the help of a hypnotherapist specializing in such cases. He also reached out to an old friend who shared one such experience. In addition to recovered memories, he describes his own inner dialogues with an apparent alien entity he calls Anzar. The discussion also includes synchronicities and mystical experience.
