Here he describes how, by engaging in a sociological examination of parapsychology as a deviant science, he came to be labelled something of a deviant himself. He has travelled the world surveying people about their extraordinary experiences. He also surveyed various academics and elite scientists about their attitudes toward the paranormal. He suggests that an interest in shamanism and healing can be very positive and life-affirming.

Paul H. Smith, PhD, has served twice as president of the International Remote Viewing Association an organization of which he is a founder. A former Army intelligence officer, he served for seven years as part of the military’s top-secret remote viewing program. He is author of Reading the Enemy’s Mind and The Essential Guide to Remote Viewing. He currently serves as president and chief trainer for Remote Viewing Instructional Services. Here he points out that parapsychologists and remote viewing researchers have benefitted from critical comments that have enabled them to design better experiments. Contrary to some popular accounts, when conditions are tightened, the experimental results continue to remain strong. Gary Lachman is the author of twenty-one books on topics ranging from the evolution of consciousness to literary suicides, popular culture and the history of the occult. He has written a rock and roll memoir of the 1970s, biographies of Aleister Crowley, Rudolf Steiner, C. G. Jung, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Emanuel Swedenborg, P. D. Here he describes the amazing life of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, whom he characterizes as one of the most remarkable women of any age in human history. Julia Mossbridge, PhD, is a Visiting Scholar in the Psychology Department  at Northwestern University, a Fellow at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, the Science Director at Focus@Will Labs, and an Associated Professor in Integral and Transpersonal Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Bernardo Kastrup, PhD, is a computer scientist. He is author of Rationalist Spirituality, Why Materialism is Baloney, Dreamed Up Reality, Meaning in Absurdity, Brief Peeks Beyond, More Than Allegory, and The Idea of the World. He has published several papers in Scientific American arguing for metaphysical idealism.

Here he maintains that the literal interpretation of religious myths does harm to both the myth and to ourselves. For centuries, people have understood that myths can be meaningful when interpreted metaphorically. However, more than that, religious myths can, and sometimes do, serve as pointers to states of consciousness that transcend the intellect. He compares human mythology to the operating system of a computer. We all have a mythology, even if it is that we have no mythology.

Dean Radin, PhD, is chief scientist at the Institute of Noetic Science in Novato, California. He is author of The Conscious Universe, Entangled Minds, Supernormal, and Real Magic.

Here he describes a series of personal synchronicities that both troubled him and led him toward a greater appreciation of esoteric forms of magick. He describes the many parallels between the traditions of psychical research and parapsychology and those of magick and the western esoteric tradition. The magical worldview, or philosophical idealism, also offers the possibility of better explaining the empirical findings of parapsychology. He also sees parallels between magickal rituals and parapsychological experiments.

Charles T. Tart, PhD, is emeritus professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, as well as the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. He is a past-president of the Parapsychological Association. He has published over 100 scientific papers in parapsychology. Here he reviews the history of what is now known as remote viewing. He describes early experiments in free-response clairvoyance. He also explains how he was recruited into the military unit at Fort Meade, Maryland, that was developed to employ remote viewing for intelligence purposes. He describes the evolution of that unit and the subsequent development of a variety of approaches to remote perception following the close of government funding in 1995.

Jeffrey John Kripal is the J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Philosophy and Religious Thought and former chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas. His books include Kali’s Child, Esalen, Authors of the Impossible, The Serpent’s Gift, Mutants and Mystics, The Supernatural (with Whitley Strieber), and Secret Body.

Here he describes his intellectual journey starting with the study of eroticism in religion and leading him into the study and appreciation of the esoteric or paranormal. His early research focused on homoeroticism in the life of the nineteenth century Hindu saint, Ramakrishna. In India, he experienced a profound state of consciousness associated with the goddess Kali. Later he worked with Whitley Strieber, a UFO contactee, and describes a striking correspondence between Strieber’s experience of the Visitors — and his understanding of Hindu goddesses.

He distinguishes his perspective from that of the British empiricist, Bishop George Berkeley, and notes that he draws inspiration from the German idealist, Arthur Schopenhauer. He claims that the logical contradictions ensuing from materialism can all be resolved. He also describes a series of findings in different areas of brain science that he finds consistent with an idealistic perspective.
