She also points out that “otherness” in sociology is often associated with fear and, therefore, the need to control. The issue of otherness is pronounced with regard to matters of gender. Here he describes the first appearance of “the Leviathan” in the biblical Book of Job, where it is described as a terrifying agent of divine power. In the seventeenth century, Thomas Hobbes used the metaphor of the Leviathan in his classic text arguing for monarchy and the divine right of sovereigns. Ironically, Hobbes’ desire to relegate living religious miracles and revelation to the ancient past can be seen as, actually, undermining the classical notion unifying divine wisdom and divine kingship as seen, for example, in ancient Iran.

Lori Williams is author of Monitoring: A Guide for Remote Viewing and Professional Intuitive Teams and also Boundless: Your How-To Guide To Practical Remote Viewing. She is founder and president of Intuitive Specialists. She is very active as a trainer of remote viewers.

Here she points out that there is a very close relationship between hypnosis and psychic functioning. She describes various hypnotic instructions that can be applied to remote viewing tasks. Here he explains his hypotheses concerning the relationship between early Islam and the Parthian House of Karen in Iran. This occurred at a time when the Parthian dynasty had been overthrown by the Sassanids, who instituted a rigid form of Zoroastrian orthodoxy as the state religion. He speculates that the House of Karen hoped that a unified Arab nation might defeat the Sassanids and that they could return to power in Iran.

Etzel Cardeña holds the endowed Thorsen Chair in psychology at Lund University in Sweden, where he directs the Center for Research on Consciousness and Anomalous Psychology (CERCAP). Among his books are Varieties of Anomalous Experience published by the American Psychological Association (APA) and now in its second edition, the two-volumes Altering Consciousness: A Multidisciplinary Perspective, and Parapsychology: A Handbook for the 21st Century, which provides a “state-of-the-art” account of the scientific evidence for parapsychology, as well as offering methodological and statistical know-how for beginner and advanced researchers. He is the editor of the Journal of Parapsychology.

Here he describes the reaction to his 2018 article in the American Psychologist summarizing the experimental evidence for parapsychology. He maintains that, although he has published more than 300 scientific papers, this was the most difficult. He was surprised that the journal agreed to publish it at all. The primary critical response is to claim that parapsychological phenomena are impossible and, therefore, the empirical evidence must be faulty.

Here he maintains that the Persian emperors of the Achaemenid dynasty organized and paid for the building of the second temple in Jerusalem. He envisions this as part of a long-term project of the ancient Iranians to use religion as a tool in their quest for a global empire. He notes that the codification of the Jewish scriptures took place under the auspices of Ezra with support from the Iranian regime. He also observes that changes in the Jewish religion under Ezra differed in various ways from ancient Israelite religion. He also points to the Book of Esther as exemplifying a close relationship between the Jews and Persians of the Achaemenid era.

Helané Wahbeh, ND, MCR is director of research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Petaluma, California and an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Wahbeh is clinically trained as a naturopathic physician and research trained with a Master of Clinical Research and two post-doctoral research fellowships.

Here she describes how, as a child, she was exposed to the channeling practiced by her grandmother and uncle. She explains that she defines channeling very broadly to include a wide range of experiences from intuition, to ESP, to trance mediumship. She notes that the Institute of Noetic Sciences is engaged in a program of channeling research that includes both physiological and psychological studies. One of their findings is that channelers, almost universally, report that the experience has been positive for themselves. Another finding is that over 80% of the population have had an experience that fits the broad definition of channeling.

Here he describes the complex relationship between Mithraism and Zoroastrianism. Over time, each of these traditions have incorporated the other, while also standing opposed to key principles in the other. The god, Mithra, is typically symbolized slaying a bull — and is considered to embody a consciousness beyond the restrictions of time and fate. At one time, Mithraism was the dominant religion of the Roman army. Jorjani speculates that Constantine made Christianity the Roman state religion as a response to the threat he saw posed by Mithraism.

Here he presents a narrative concerning the possible Scythian/Iranian origin of Buddhism. He points out that the appelation “Sakamuni” is a likely reference to Gautama’s Scythian origins. His bold hypothesis suggests that Gautama is one and the same with Lao Tzu, the ostensible founder of Taoism. Further Jorjani suggests that Gautama may have also been the magus, Gaumata, who briefly ruled the Achaemenid Persian empire. Fundamentally, he sees Buddhism as a refutation of Zoroastrian thought.

Bernardo Kastrup, PhD, is a computer scientist, who has recently completed a second doctoral degree in philosophy. He is author of Rationalist Spirituality, Why Materialism is Baloney, Dreamed Up Reality, Meaning in Absurdity, Brief Peeks Beyond, More Than Allegory, and The Idea of the World. He has published several papers in Scientific American arguing for metaphysical idealism.

Here he explains the difference between subjective and objective idealism — and also distinguishes idealism from dual-aspect monism. He describes the roles played by Berkeley, Kant, and Schopenhauer in the development of idealistic philosophy. While this viewpoint was once considered mainstream in philosophy, it is now out-of-favor. He argues that fads and fashions in philosophy are predicated more on social trends than on careful logic.

Debashish Banerji, PhD, is Haridas Chaudhuri Professor of Indian Philosophies and Cultures and Chairman of the East West Psychology Department at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He is author of Seven Quartets of Becoming: A Transformative Yoga Psychology Based on the Diaries of Sri Aurobindo and also The Alternatate Nation of Abanindranath Tagore, a book about his great grandfather. He edited an anthology about his great uncle, Rabindranath Tagore in the Twenty-First Century. His newest anthology is titled Critical Posthumanism and Planetary Futures.

Here he discusses the different approaches toward the siddhis in Tantra and Vedanta. He argues for a balance between these; and notes that, in the yoga system of Aurobindo, balance itself is considered one of the siddhis. He describes the cultural impact of colonization and eventual liberation of India as it influenced and, conversely, was influenced by the long tradition of yoga. He points out the enormous, potential social utility of the siddhis — such as the ability to convert pain into pleasure.

Bruce Olav Solheim, PhD, is professor of history at Citrus College in Glendora, California. He also served as a Fulbright professor in 2003 at the University of Tromsø in northern Norway. He has just begun teaching a paranormal personal history course at Citrus College Fall 2018. Here he shares a number of personal stories involving telepathy. They include difficulties in romantic relationships as well as experiences working in a military prison. He also shares several experiences of ostensible telepathic communications with the deceased, an ability he has had since childhood. He expresses his belief that, given a certain level of spiritual protection, communication with the deceased is easier than with the living — as they no longer are trying to hide aspects of themselves.

Bruce Damer, PhD, is coauthor with David Deamer, of a new theory on the origins of life that was featured in a Scientific American cover story in 2017. Here he distinguishes between three different philosophical styles: flux philosophies are oriented toward the future, stasis philosophies are oriented toward the past, and process philosophies focus on the present. Alfred North Whitehead, perhaps the greatest philosopher of the twentieth century, was a process philosopher. Time, as we experience it, is conditioned by archetypal processes. These processes entail civilizational godheads that are not entirely alien from actual god.

Gary Lachman is the author Jung The Mystic: Esoteric Dimensions of Carl Jung’s Life and Teachings as well as over twenty other books on topics ranging from the evolution of consciousness to literary suicides, popular culture and the history of the occult. To find historical precedent for such explorations, he delved into gnosticism, alchemy, astrology, divination, and Eastern mysticism.

Loyd Auerbach, MS, received his masters’ degree in parapsychology from John F. Kennedy University. Karlene Stange, DVM, is author of The Spiritual Nature of Animals: A Country Vet Explores the Wisdom, Compassion, and Souls of Animals.

Here she describes how, starting as a skeptic, she sought instruction in animal communication from a professional intuitive. Along the way, she came to realize that veterinary doctors are already very skilled in this art — even though they may not consciously realize it. She provides many examples of animal communication. Loyd Auerbach, MS, received his masters’ degree in parapsychology from John F. Kennedy University. He is author of Mind Over Matter; ESP, Hauntings, and Poltergeists: A Parapsychologist’s Handbook; Reincarnation, Channeling, and Possession; Psychic Dreaming; A Paranormal Casebook; and Ghost Hunting: How to Investigate the Paranormal. He is co-author (with Ed May, Joseph McMoneagle, and Victor Rubel) of ESP Wars: East and West. He is the Director of the Office of Paranormal Investigations. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Rhine Research Center.

Here he suggests that the principles of sports psychology also apply to the cultivation of psychokinesis. He maintains that we ultimately use PK to control our own bodies. The wide-ranging discussion that follows covers spoon-bending, poltergeists, martial arts, magical illusions, seances, as well as apports and disappearances. Considerable emphasis is placed on overcoming the psychological resistance to either witnessing or practicing psychokinesis.

Anngwyn St. Just, PhD, is a social traumatologist. She is author of the two volume set of books titled Trauma: Time, Space, and Fractals. She is also author of the five volume set titled Trauma and the Human Condition. She has worked throughout the world helping victims of war and disaster.

Here she indicates that her approach to the dynamics between perpetrators and victims has been strongly influenced by the family constellation work of Bert Hellinger. She notes that victims often seek revenge and, therefore, become perpetrators themselves. She points out that victims and perpetrators share a certain traumatic bond. She hold Nelson Mandela up, among others, as an example of someone who worked to break the cycle of victimization and revenge. She distinguishes between being victimized and holding “victim consciousness”.

Jonathan Beecher is the founder of White Crow Books. He is editor of the anthology, In Times of War: Messages of Wisdom from Soldiers in the Afterlife.

Here describes his own transformation that occurred in the year 2000 when he suffered from an accident while sleep walking. After six weeks of recovery, he found that he was a different person. A series of spiritualistic experiences led him to a quest for knowledge. He shows how his own experiences led him to accept the claims of Air Marshall Lord Dowding, commander of the Royal Air Force during WWII’s Battle of Britain. Dowding became a devoted spiritualist and organized a rescue circle. A similar circle had been organized earlier by the noted psychiatrist, Dr. Carl Wickland. In these circles, and several others, detailed cases were recorded involving communications from deceased individuals.

Karlene Stange, DVM, is author of The Spiritual Nature of Animals: A Country Vet Explores the Wisdom, Compassion, and Souls of Animals.

Here she suggests that humans and animals share many similar conscious experiences. Science is now correcting previous mistaken beliefs that animals do not experience pain, do not show emotions, and are not even conscious. She provides many stories illustrating the enormous capacities of different animals. She maintains that these beliefs developed in order to justify cruel behavior toward animals. She shares her belief that many animals willingly sacrifice themselves for each other and for humans.

Sometimes this is deliberate as when terrorists choose anniversary dates of previous attacks. Mostly, it appears to be less than fully conscious. She suggests that this repetition of patterns can be understood in terms of fractal geometry. To illustrate her thesis she focuses on the massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.

Gary Lachman is the author of twenty-one books on topics ranging from the evolution of consciousness to literary suicides, popular culture and the history of the occult. Hermes Trismegistus represents an amalgamation of the Egyptian god Thoth and the Greek god Hermes. The original literature is of unknown authorship and focuses on the attainment of higher stats of consciousness. Hermeticism serves as the backbone of the western esoteric tradition that also includes astrology, tarot, alchemy, and ceremonial magick. Hermeticism was particularly influential during the Renaissance.

Joseph Burkes, MD, is a board certified specialist in internal medicine. He is coauthor of the chapter titled “Medical Healings Reported by UAP Contact Experiencers: An Analysis of the FREE Date” in the anthology Beyond UFOs: The Science of Consciousness and Contact with Non Human Intelligence “Volume 1”.

James E. Alcock, PhD, is professor emeritus of psychology at York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is a fellow and member of the executive council of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. Robert Davis, PhD, is a retired professor of neuroscience at the State University of New York. He is author of The UFO Phenomenon: Should I Believe? and Life After Death: An Analysis of the Evidence.

Here he describes the results of a survey of individuals who believe themselves to have experienced contact with non-human intelligence associated with unidentified aerial phenomena. Over 3,000 people responded to an in-depth survey. About 70% reported that their experiences had a positive impact in their life. About 25% reported that they had strong, waking memories of having been taken aboard a craft of some sort.

Lisa Smartt, MA, is a linguist, educator, and poet. She founded The Final Words Project, an ongoing study devoted to collecting and interpreting the mysterious language at the end of lives. She is author of Words at the Threshold: What We Say When We’re Nearing Death.

Here she points out that much can be learned about the consciousness of dying individuals by paying attention to their language. One can develop an appreciation for speech that seems nonsensical by understanding that a dying person may be experiencing two different realities simultaneously. Similar patterns can often be found in individuals experiencing other altered states of awareness such as dementia or schizophrenia. Her work is largely predicated on Raymond Moody’s studies of near-death experience and the language of nonsense.

Dani Caputi is a doctoral candidate in atmospheric science at the University of California, Davis. She is conducting an experiment on psychokinetic influence of atmospheric turbulence.

Here she maintains that in order to properly understand the nature of consciousness, it is essential to distinguish between the self as the subject of experience and the “self” as a constellation of concepts within consciousness. The conversation also covers questions of identity, memory, post-mortem survival, reincarnation, multiple personalities, chaos and turbulence.

Sally Rhine Feather, PhD, is on the board or directors of the Rhine Research Center. She is coauthor of The Gift: The Extraordinary Paranormal Experiences of Ordinary People.

Here she describes her life, growing up as the eldest daughter of Joseph Banks Rhine, widely regarded as the father of modern parapsychology. As a teenager, and also as an adult, she worked at the parapsychology lab at Duke University. Research at the time focused on personality and mood variables associated with ESP, psychokinesis, and precognition. The existence of psi was accepted by the researchers. She describes the great care the researchers took to prevent errors or fraud.

Bernardo Kastrup, PhD, is a computer scientist. He is author of Rationalist Spirituality, Why Materialism is Baloney, Dreamed Up Reality, Meaning in Absurdity, Brief Peeks Beyond, More Than Allegory, and The Idea of the World. He has published several papers in Scientific American arguing for metaphysical idealism.

Here he describes a process of examining the mind deeply to discover the inner realities that exist at layers deeper than our cultural conditioning and personal psychology. He enumerates various approaches including meditation, biofeedback, breathing, and psychedelic drug use. Then he describes several experiences of his own after each of which he recorded detailed notes. Based on these experiences, he reflects on the nature of reality.

Stephan A. Schwartz is a Distinguished Consulting Faculty of Saybrook University. He is the columnist for the journal Explore, and editor of the daily web publication Schwartzreport.net in both of which he covers trends that are affecting the future. His other academic and research appointments include: Senior Fellow for Brain, Mind and Healing of the Samueli Institute; founder and Research Director of the Mobius laboratory. Government appointments include Special Assistant for Research and Analysis to the Chief of Naval Operations. Schwartz was the principal researcher studying the use of Remote Viewing in archaeology. Using Remote Viewing he discovered Cleopatra’s Palace, Marc Antony’s Timonium, ruins of the Lighthouse of Pharos, and sunken ships along the California coast, and in the Bahamas. He is the author of more than 130 technical reports and papers. He has written The Secret Vaults of Time, The Alexandria Project, Mind Rover, Opening to the Infinite, and The 8 Laws of Change.

Here he describes how Christopher Columbus was forced to abandon two ships in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, during his fourth voyage to the western hemisphere. He and his crew were marooned for over a year. For decades, nautical archeologists have been searching for these shipwrecks. Eventually, one archeologist sought the assistance of remote viewers from Schwartz’ Mobius Group. Stephan describes how he developed the Mobius consensus protocol and organized a project to locate the remnants of Columbus’ ships. The accuracy of the descriptors provided by the remote viewers was remarkably high.

Jeffrey J. Kripal is the J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Philosophy and Religious Thought and former chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas. His books include Kali’s Child, Esalen, Authors of the Impossible, The Serpent’s Gift, Mutants and Mystics, The Supernatural (with Whitley Strieber), and Secret Body. He is coauthor, with Elizabeth Krohn, of Changed in a Flash: One Woman’s Near-Death Experience and Why a Scholar Thinks It Empowers Us All.

Here he shares a scholarly perspective on the non-fiction books and claims of Whitley Strieber. He describes Strieber as a prophet or shaman in a culture that has no place for prophets and shamans. He acknowledges that he differs from Strieber regarding the physicality of the events he has described. He also doubts that these circumstances are amenable to scientific evaluation. He suggests that humanistic approaches, such as hermeneutics offer much promise in understanding the mystery of Strieber’s life.
