Philip A. Goff, PhD, is professor of philosophy at Durham University in the United Kingdom. He is author of Galileo’s Error: Foundations for a New Science of Consciousness and also Consciousness and Fundamental Reality.

Here he describes the philosophical approach of addressing the many problems associated with consciousness through logical analysis. He maintains that strict materialism logically implies that consciousness does not exist. While many criticize dualism for failing to define how mind and matter can interact, he maintains that this is not necessarily a fatal flaw. He suggests that panpsychism, the view that the essence of the physical world is mental, avoids many of these problems.

Carlos S. Alvarado, PhD, is a Research Fellow at the Parapsychology Foundation, and Adjunct Research Faculty at Sofia University. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Near-Death Studies and the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, and is the Book Review Editor of the Journal of Parapsychology, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Scientific Exploration. Here he shares his interest and passion for the work of the Italian scholar, Ernesto Bozzano, who was a foremost proponent of the spirit survival hypothesis. He touches on many of Bozzano’s interests including bilocation, transcendental music, hauntings, telekinesis, mediumship, apparitions, and deathbed phenomena. While Bozzano accepted and wrote about living agent psi, he argued strenuously that this could not account for the many phenomena that were documented in the literature of spiritualism, mesmerism, and psychical research.

Here he reflects on why the profession of psychotherapy is diminishing while increasingly more people are seeking help from psychics, mediums, and healing practitioners. Research evidence shows that psychotherapy does work — including a variety of short-term approaches. The most talented therapists, however, do not necessarily follow any particular school or doctrine. Instead, they are focused on the particular needs of their client — and, typically, they learn to rely upon their intuition. He argues that therapists must think of themselves as healers rather than clinicians.

Darryl Robert Schoon is a financial analyst famous for having predicted the 2008 market crash. His website is www.drschoon.com. He is author of Light in a Dark Place: The Prison Years. He has also written a novel titled You Can’t Always Get What You Want. He is a minister with the Temple of Universality in Tucson, Arizona.

Here he employs Plato’s allegory of the cave as pointing toward the idea that we are all the prisoners of our own misperceptions. Going a step further, he invokes Carlos Castaneda’s Teachings of Don Juan Matus to suggest that something akin to a parasitic infection prevents humans from functioning in a full, open-hearted manner. This is a vision held in common by many in the shamanic and gnostic communities. He ascribes many conspiracy theories to what he calls “ego dissociative syndrome” (EDS) and points out many of the hazards of accepting conspiracy beliefs. He also describes a number of conspiracy theories about which he suggests he has personal information.

Miranda Alcott, MA, is an intuitive, animal communicator. Here he describes the many talents of the great, French renaissance man, Charles Richet — a pioneer in aviation, medicine, and psychology who also wrote extensively in many other areas. Psychical research may have been Richet’s greatest passion, and the area of inquiry for which he is mostly remembered today. His explorations of the physical phenomena associated with mediumship were extensive. He also experimented with telepathic hypnotic induction. Although he participated in many seances, he was not a spiritualist.

Here she points out that the word used in the Yoga Sutras as the goal of yoga is kaivalya. While it is sometimes translated as enlightenment, it means resting in the self. She interprets this to mean a unity of body and mind. In Jungian depth psychology, body awareness is often pursued through the integration and understanding of dream imagery. Other forms of psychology, following the somatic therapies initiated by WIlhelm Reich, tend to work with the body more directly with techniques akin to massage. Yoga is also considered within the framework of somatic therapies.

Darryl Robert Schoon is a financial analyst famous for having predicted the 2008 market crash. His website is www.drschoon.com. He is author of Light in a Dark Place: The Prison Years. He has also written a novel titled You Can’t Always Get What You Want. He is a minister with the Temple of Universality in Tucson, Arizona.

Here he describes how he encountered the spiritualist medium, Hoyt Robinette, who produced physical materializations of drawings and also convincing spirit communications. Additionally, he was introduced to spiritualist healings mediated by Bruno Gröning, a German healer who died in 1959. As a result of these encounters, he and his wife became spiritualist ministers at the Temple of Universality in Tucson, Arizona.

Peter B. Todd, MAPS, a psychotherapist with a Jungian orientation, is author of The Individuation of God: Integrating Science and Religion. He experienced clinical death, during cardiac surgery, in 2005, and was subsequently revived. He was also a gold medalist at the 1982 Gay Games in San Francisco.

Here he notes that, throughout his career, Teilhard, a Jesuit paleontologist and theologian, suffered from restrictions and persecution by church authorities. He developed a lofty vision of biological evolution and the divinization of the world. He saw Jesus Christ as a cosmic figure acting as an attractor, pulling all sentient beings toward an Omega point of maximum complexity and consciousness. The American Episcopal Church holds a feast day in his honor.

In yoga philosophy the feminine is associated with prakriti, a sanskrit work denoting anything manifest. Perusha is associated with masculinity and denotes the unmanifest consciousness.

Ruth Kastner, PhD, is a member of the Foundations of Physics group at the University of Maryland, College Park. Here she offers the metaphor of a carpet that is too large for the room in which it is placed. Nothing can be done to avoid a lump — except to make the room larger. Similarly, every interpretation of quantum physics seems to entail a different paradoxical result. She maintains that, by allowing for real physical events that are not in 4-D conventional spacetime, these paradoxes can be resolved.

Here he points out that, like metaphysical idealism, dual-aspect monism is a theory of mind that serves as an alternative to the mainstream view of metaphysical materialism. It postulates a neutral, primordial substance that is neither mind nor matter, but from which both originate. In the approach developed by Carl Jung and Wolfgang Pauli this original substance is known as “anima mundi” or the world soul. In the approach of physicist David Bohm, and his colleagues, it is referred to as the “implicate order”. Todd discusses the scientific, religious, and social implications of this theory of mind.

She points out that this requires a measure of trust — as well as patience and persistence. There are many techniques that can assist with self-healing. These include meditation, visualization, and self-hypnosis. It is very helpful to be able to feel compassion toward oneself. The ultimate key is connection with the source of one’s being.

Here she maintains that quantum indeterminacy is not quite the same as “randomness” and that it does allow for the possibility of free will, which is otherwise incompatible with a completely deterministic universe. Physics, however, has nothing to say about consciousness — a term that is not defined precisely in any physical theory. However, it is interesting to note that the “iceberg” metaphor used by Freud to describe the human subconscious can be equally applied to the ontological realm of possibility or “Quantumland” as defined in the Transactional Interpretation.

Edward R. Close, PhD, is author of Transcendental Physics. He is coauthor (with Vernon Neppe) of Reality Begins with Consciousness: A Paradigm Shift That Works. He is also author of a lengthy chapter titled “The Mathematical Unification of Time, Space, Matter, Energy, and Consciousness” in Is Consciousness Primary? edited by Gary Schwartz and Marjorie Woollacott.

Here he points out that most mathematicians regard regard the findings of mathematics to be ontologically real. Some would go further and say that the physical universe is fundamentally mathematical. Edward Close focuses on the fact that, because physical reality is quantized, mathematical equations that have integer solutions (known as Diophantine equations) are particularly important. He goes into detail regarding his application of Fermat’s Last Theorem toward the mathematical unification of the physical universe and consciousness.

Neal Grossman, PhD, is an emeritus associate professor of philosophy at the University of Illinois, Chicago. He is author of Conversations with Socrates and Plato: How a Post-Materialist Social Order Can Solve the Challenges of Modern Life and Insure Our Survival. He is also author of The Spirit of Spinoza: Healing the Mind.

Here he points out that the 17th century philosopher, Benedict Spinoza, was excommunicated from the Jewish community of Amsterdam. He did not believe that God was wholly separate from creation, but rather that the universe is created from God and is, therefore part of God. We are like cells in the body of God. Spinoza was a rationalist. The main thrust of his philosophy was to enable individuals to have the experience of unity with the divine. As such, he was one of philosophy’s greatest mystics.

Here she shares many details regarding the capabilities of the individual cells in our bodies. A 6-foot human has about 100 trillion individual cells. There are 200 different types of cells that all emerge from a single fertilized egg. Ruth Kastner, PhD, is a member of the Foundations of Physics group at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is author of The Transactional Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics: The Reality of Possibility, Understanding Our Unseen Reality: Solving Quantum Riddles, and Adventures in Quantumland: Exploring Our Unseen Reality.

Here she reviews the history of the transactional interpretation of quantum mechanics, originally developed by physicist John Cramer at the University of Washington. She, herself, was responsible for recent modifications to the theory — thus the “relativistic” nomenclature. The theory maintains that enormous action related to the actualization of quantum events takes place outside of the spacetime domain. While this interpretation is not dependent upon consciousness, it allows for the existence of consciousness and is consistent with metaphysical idealism.

Edward R. Close, PhD, is author of Transcendental Physics. He is coauthor (with Vernon Neppe) of Reality Begins with Consciousness: A Paradigm Shift That Works. Here he describes how the concept of nonlocality has been used in theoretical physics. He notes that the term has also been borrowed by people in parapsychology and consciousness studies. Some physicists object to the use of the term to describe the phenomenology of consciousness. However, in many ways, the term is apt. He then relates the concept of nonlocality to the Triadic Dimensional Vortical Paradigm (TDVP) model that he has developed with Dr. Vernon Neppe.

The most fundamental premise is that people would naturally be truthful with each other at all times. Lying and deception would not occur. It would be recognized that newborn infants are coming into the world with a life purpose, and child-raising would be based on the premise of helping them to understand and actualize that purpose.

Carlos S. Alvarado, PhD, is a Research Fellow at the Parapsychology Foundation, and Adjunct Research Faculty at Sofia University. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Near-Death Studies and the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, and is the Book Review Editor of the Journal of Parapsychology, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Scientific Exploration. Here he reflects on the life and accomplishments of Camille Flammarion, who was widely known as a popularizer of both astronomy and psychical research. He was closely associated with the spiritism of Allan Kardec. He was also involved in the investigation of many mediums, including the controversial Eusapia Paladino whom he accepted as genuine. He himself had mediumistic talents and engaged in automatic writing. He was also widely known for the “Flammarion Engraving” depicting a mystical vision.

Peter B. Todd, MAPS, a psychotherapist with a Jungian orientation, is author of The Individuation of God: Integrating Science and Religion. He experienced clinical death, during cardiac surgery, in 2005, and was subsequently revived. He was also a gold medalist at the 1982 Gay Games in San Francisco.

Here he describes the numinous qualities associated with his death experience in 2005. Prior to that experience, he had been at the deathbeds of hundreds of AIDS victims, both in the United States and Australia. At that time, he was already well-versed in the theories of both Carl G. Jung and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Therefore, he was already well-prepared for his own death experience. That profound experience awakened in him a desire to serve as an activist for a new theology for the third millennium that would integrate science and religion.

William Van Gordon, PhD, is a Chartered Psychologist who lectures and conducts research in psychology at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom. He sits on the editorial board for various academic journals including Mindfulness and Mindfulness and Compassion.
He is also co-editor of two academic anthologies: Mindfulness and Buddhist-derived Approaches in Mental Health and Addiction, and The Buddhist Foundations of Mindfulness. William has over 100 academic publications relating to the scientific study of meditation. Prior to joining academia, William was a Buddhist monk for ten years.

Here he describes a multi-year research project involving advanced Buddhist meditators who were able to enter into a particular state of consciousness known as emptiness. This is something of a paradoxical state involving an investigation of the nature of the “self”. A year was spent selecting and recruiting meditators who were skilled in this practice. Detailed descriptions were collected of this unusual state of consciousness. A battery of psychometric tests revealed that “emptiness” produced more profound changes in these meditators than did “mindfulness”.

Here he elaborates on several ostensible paradoxes associated with Einstein’s theories of relativity. The normal laws that we associate with space and time in our daily lives break down. Ironically, while people associate Einstein with relativity, he considered himself a determinist. Close proposes that paradoxes of space and time are resolved once we bring consciousness into the picture. His model includes 3 dimensions of space, 3 dimensions of time, and 3 dimensions of consciousness. He elaborates on his view of higher consciousness.

Jason Reza Jorjani, PhD, is a philosopher and author of Prometheus and Atlas, World State of Emergency, Lovers of Sophia, Novel Folklore: The Blind Owl of Sadegh Hedayat, and Iranian Leviathan: A Monumental History of Mithra’s Abode.

Here he discusses the process by which the earlier Mazdakite movement evolved, via Sufi mysticism, into Iranian Shiism. In fact, Shah Ismail Safavi, founder of the first Shiite Iranian dynasty, was himself the leader of a Sufi order. Under Safavi rule, Iranian art and architecture excelled. The great poets — Rumi and Hafez — wrote eloquently about the religion of love that superceded all of the established religions. These esoteric turns, while challenging religious orthodoxy, also became incorporated into Shiism.

Rick Strassman, MD, is an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico. He is author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule — A Doctor’s Revolutionary Research Into the Biology of Near-Death and Mystical Experiences, Inner Paths to Outer Space: Journeys to Alien Worlds Through Psychedelics and Other Spiritual Technologies, and DMT and the Soul of Prophecy: a New Science of Spiritual Revelation in the Hebrew Bible. Here he describes how he was an active Buddhist meditator for twenty years while he was also engaged in DMT research. Eventually he left Buddhist practice, and began a deep study of the Hebrew bible. Initially, he thought that the DMT “spirit molecule” might be responsible for spiritual experiences. In retrospect, he now believes that DMT serves as a placebo to amplify that which is already in the mind. He has developed the concept of “theoneurology” — suggesting that the divine acts upon human imagination that then inspires the rational intellect.

Jack Hunter, PhD, is currently a Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Chester in the UK. He is author of Engaging the Anomalous, and is editor of a new anthology titled Greening the Paranormal: Exploring the Ecology of Extraordinary Experience. Here he proposes that ecology and parapsychology have much in common — and that the obstacles facing both fields are similar in many ways. He notes that many ecological activists report having had both paranormal and religious conversion types of experiences. He suggests that the complex relationships among non-human life forms uncovered in ecology provide a model for understanding the wide variety of paranormal phenomena. He also maintains that were are learning many surprising things about how plants communicate, suggesting a hidden intelligence and, perhaps, even consciousness.

Russell Targ, a laser physicist, cofounded the remote viewing research program at SRI International. He is coauthor of Mind Reach, The Mind Race, Miracles of Mind, The Heart of the Mind, and The End of Suffering. He is author of Limitless Mind and The Reality of ESP: A Physicist’s Proof of Psychic Abilities. He is also coeditor of the anthology, Mind At Large.

Here he notes that a number of parapsychologists are unwilling to accept the existence of psi. Yet, in his own experience, remote viewing is very robust and productive. He suggests that the best researchers have had psi experiences of their own; and also have been engaged with esoteric traditions and spiritual practices. Here he describes the history of the double-slit experiments that confirmed the mysterious wave-particle duality of photons. This work began prior to the development of quantum physics. Later, physicist John Wheeler proposed the delayed-choice modification of this experiment that further confirmed the role of the conscious observer in the manifestation of observable reality. The mysteries of quantum physics are also highlighted in the EPR paradox as developed by Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen.

Peter B. Todd, MAPS, a psychotherapist with a Jungian orientation, is author of The Individuation of God: Integrating Science and Religion. He experienced clinical death, during cardiac surgery, in 2005, and was subsequently revived. He was also a gold medalist at the 1982 Gay Games in San Francisco.

Here he reviews the outlines of what he believes could become a new theology, open to both mystical experience and modern science. He builds upon the evolutionary, process theology of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. He also emphasizes the unification of particle physics and depth psychology — as revealed in the explorations of Carl G. Jung and Nobel laureate Wolfgang Pauli. Additionally he pays homage to the concept of the “implicate order” in the work of physicist David Bohm.

William Bengston currently serves as president of the Society for Scientific Exploration. He is author of The Energy Cure: Unravelling the Mystery of Hands-On Healing. He is a professor of sociology at St. Joseph’s College in New York.

Here he describes how he began his investigations as a young man who encountered a psychic healer who served as his mentor and friend. When his friend backed out of participation in a healing experiment with cancer-injected mice, Bengston stepped in unwillingly. To his astonishment, after several healing sessions, the mice were completely cured. This result has now been replicated numerous times. Bengston discusses his approach to healing research and his attitude toward healing.

Here Jeffrey Mishlove builds upon the notion of “actual god” as distinct from the godhead images of any particular civilization. He suggests that there are several vectors pointing toward a new theology that would be integrated with science. These include new advances in rigorous idealist ontologies, parapsychology research, near-death studies, reincarnation research, and meditation research. He suggests that we are near the beginning of this new phase that could well take 600 years to reach fruition. He explores the notion that actual god might be simultaneously aware of the experience of every sentient being in the universe.

Etzel Cardeña holds the endowed Thorsen Chair in psychology at Lund University in Sweden, where he directs the Center for Research on Consciousness and Anomalous Psychology (CERCAP). Among his books are Varieties of Anomalous Experience published by the American Psychological Association (APA) and now in its second edition, the two-volumes Altering Consciousness: A Multidisciplinary Perspective, and Parapsychology: A Handbook for the 21st Century, which provides a “state-of-the-art” account of the scientific evidence for parapsychology, as well as offering methodological and statistical know-how for beginner and advanced researchers. He is the editor of the Journal of Parapsychology.

Here he discusses the many ways in which altered states of consciousness are being used to enhance human performance. These altered states include hypnosis, meditation, and entheogens. He discusses the care researchers need to take in distinguishing between induction procedures and reported alterations of awareness. He provides examples in the arts, philosophy, athletics — and, particularly, parapsychology.

Jason Reza Jorjani, PhD, is a philosopher and author of Prometheus and Atlas, World State of Emergency, Lovers of Sophia, Novel Folklore: The Blind Owl of Sadegh Hedayat, and Iranian Leviathan: A Monumental History of Mithra’s Abode.

Here he discusses the effects of orthodox Zoroastrianism, the state religion of the Sasanian Persian Dynasty, upon the Manichaean and Mazdakite gnostic traditions in Iran. Mani was a talented physician, artist, and religious figure who endeavored to construct a world religion combining Buddhism, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism. The Mazdakite tradition promoted both the abolishment of private property and of monogamous marriage. Both sects sects were initially supported and then suppressed violently by the state.

Loyd Auerbach, MS, received his masters’ degree in parapsychology from John F. Kennedy University. He is author of Mind Over Matter; ESP, Hauntings, and Poltergeists: A Parapsychologist’s Handbook; Reincarnation, Channeling, and Possession; Psychic Dreaming; A Paranormal Casebook; and Ghost Hunting: How to Investigate the Paranormal. Callum Cooper, PhD, is a lecturer in psychology at the University of Northampton in the United Kingdom. He is author of Telephone Calls From the Dead. He is coeditor, with Steven Parsons, of Paracoustics: Sound and the Paranormal. And, he is coauthor (with Alex Tanous) of Conversations With Ghosts. His website is www.callumecooper.com.

Here he describes the remarkable career of Alex Tanous (1926 – 1990) who worked for twenty years as a research subject and an investigator with the American Society for Psychical Research. Tanous was extensively and successfully tested for his out-of-body abilities. He was also known for documented instances of bilocation. He was particularly interested in investigating apparition and poltergeist cases. He developed a therapeutic model for causing the disturbing psychokinetic symptoms of such cases to abate.
