Spiritual Emergence and Psychosis with Brian Spittles

Brian Spittles, PhD, is an academic researcher and member of the Emergent Phenomenology Research Consortium which aims to integrate clinical, scientific, and spiritual paradigms to improve therapeutic outcomes. His research includes consciousness studies, transpersonal psychology, psychosis, mental health recovery, quantum physics, mysticism, and indigenous knowledge/healing systems. In this conversation, Mitch Horowitz, alternative spirituality scholar and PEN award-winning author of “Modern Occultism,” “Occult America,” “One Simple Idea,” “The Miracle Club,” “Daydream Believer,” and others examines the positive role of secret societies such as the Illuminati. Horowitz delves into the impact occultism has had on social movements including suffragism and abolitionism and how it fostered greater religious equality. In this interview with Christopher Naughton, Bruce Greyson, M.D. states that nearly 30% of all near-death experiences are accompanied by a “life review,” an examination of all the events in one’s life. They often are experienced with intensive detail, as seen and felt through one’s own perceptions as well as others, without judgment or punishment.

Greyson’s story begins in the early 1970s. Long before the term Near Death Experience (NDE) became part of our vocabulary, two figures crossed paths at the University of Virginia that would change everything relating to the yet-unnamed phenomenon. Dr. Raymond Moody, collecting stories of near-death experiences that would eventually be the basis of his groundbreaking best-seller “Life After Life,” became a student of Bruce Greyson, M.D., a psychiatrist and professor at UVA who had collected a few NDE stories of his own. Moody would become a best-selling author on the subject and Greyson would go on to start IANDs (the International Association of Near Death Studies), author the book “After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal about Life and Beyond,” and help formulate what would become the University of Virginia’s Division of Perceptual Studies (DOPS) program. Today Greyson is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia.

Greyson’s work reveals that NDEs have been reported in various cultures throughout history, indicating that they are not limited to specific religious or cultural beliefs. He also states that NDEs can lead to a transformation and renewal of one’s perspective on life, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all beings.

Heidi Jurka is author of The Making of a Psychic. During the period from 1976 to 1979 she worked closely with parapsychologist Andrija Puharich on his “space kids” project. She was living in Puharich’s house in August 1978 when the place was set on fire by an arsonist.

Paul Werbos, is a distinguished American mathematician and engineer renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of artificial intelligence. He is credited with introducing the backpropagation algorithm to train artificial neural networks. He embarked on his academic journey at Harvard University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. A year later receiving another degree in Economics from the London School of economics. Werbos furthered his education at Harvard, obtaining a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics while also studying Quantum Physics. This diverse academic background laid the foundation for his later work, showcasing an ability to bridge the gap between science, mathematics, and economic theory. Werbos has won several awards and has held various influential roles, including serving as a program director at the National Science Foundation for over twenty-five years. Paul shares his work on neural networks and machine learning as well as his personal experiences with psi including precognition and an out-of-body experience. Heidi Jurka is author of The Making of a Psychic. During the period from 1976 to 1979 she worked closely with parapsychologist Andrija Puharich on his “space kids” project. She was living in Puharich’s house in August 1978 when the place was set on fire by an arsonist.

Alex Gomez-Marin, PhD, is director of the Organism Behavior Laboratory at the Institute of Neuroscience in Alicante, Spain. He is an associate professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the director of the Pari Center in Tuscany, Italy. His work encompasses the microscopic origins of the arrow of time, animal neuroethology in different species, and artificial intelligence applied to human stupidity. His current research focuses on the scientific study of consciousness in the real world. His research proposal, “Seeing Without Eyes,” won the Linda G. O’Bryant Noetic Sciences research prize.
