Gregory Shushan, PhD, is author of Conceptions of the Afterlife in Early Civilizations, Near-Death Experience in Indigenous Religions, and, most recently, The Next World: Extraordinary Experiences of the Afterlife.

Here he maintains that the afterlife depictions from near-death experiencers are quite similar to the accounts provided by young children who remember the intermission period between lives. With important exceptions, mediumistic descriptions as well as reports obtained during hypnotic regression tend to be laden with cultural prejudices. This raises the question of the extent to which actual afterlife experience is conditioned by social expectations.

Jonathan Rose, PhD, is series editor for the New Century Edition of Emanuel Swedenborg’s theological writings. He is author of The Message of Love in the Ten Commandments and Swedenborg’s Garden of Theology. He is also a contributor to A Lexicon to the Latin Text of the Theological Writings of Emanuel Swedenborg.

Here he points out that Swedenborg, an eighteenth century scientist, engaged in lengthy excursions into the afterlife throughout the last three decades of his life – as the result of a spiritual awakening. Dr. Rose describes Swedenborg’s visions of angels and demons and how they align with or conflict with the conventional Christian theology of his era. He explains the conflict we feel between the desires of our inner and outer nature.

Barbara Ensrud served as president of the board of directors of the Rhine Research Center from 2016 to 2000. She is coeditor, with Sally Rhine Feather of J. B. Rhine, Letters 1923-1939: ESP and the Foundations of Parapsychology.

During the 1930s, the Parapsychology research program at Duke University established experimental protocols that were successful in demonstrating the existence of extrasensory perception, precognition, and psychokinesis. The public reaction was enormous and largely positive, while the academic community – psychology in particular – was mostly hostile. At the end of the decade, Rhine published the classic book, Extrasensory Perception After Sixty Years, in which he addressed in detail every scientific criticism that had been raised.

James Tunney, LLM, is an Irish barrister who has lectured on legal matters throughout the world. He is a poet, a scholar, and author of The Mystery of the Trapped Light: Mystical Thoughts in the Dark Age of Scientism plus The Mystical Accord: Sutras to Suit Our Times, Lines for Spiritual Evolution; also Empire of Scientism: The Dispiriting Conspiracy and Inevitable Tyranny of Scientocracy, TechBondAge: Slavery of the Human Spirit, and Human Entrance to Transhumanism: Machine Merger and the End of Humanity. Here he describes a 1917 series of events that took place in Fatima, Portugal, involving apparitions of “Our Lady” that appeared to three children – and eventually to a large crowd of tens of thousands of people. Various prophecies have been associated with the Fatima occurrences. Tunney examines the existing records concerning these prophecies and relates them to the rise of scientistic materialism, the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, and the loss of belief in the supernatural – even within the Church itself. Here he points out that spiritual epiphanies can occur to individuals with strong scientific backgrounds and materialistic beliefs, such as Nobel laureate Kary Mullis or professional skeptic Michael Shermer. Sometimes, but not always, such events lead to profound shifts in belief.
